Epiphyllum 'Sarah Courant' (Orchideenkaktus)

Epiphyllum ‘Sarah Courant’ is a striking variety of epiphytic cactus, valued for its large, brightly colored flowers and lush tropical appearance. It belongs to the group of “orchid cacti” (Epiphyllum hybrid), grown mainly for its impressive blooming and elegant stem shape.

🔹 Botanical features:

• Habit: An epiphytic plant with flat, long, and curved stems, spineless, growing in a cascading form. It is ideal for hanging pots or large planters, where it can naturally display its growth.

• Stems (cladodes): Green, broad and flattened, with slightly scalloped edges. They can reach lengths of over 60–100 cm, becoming increasingly curved as the plant matures.

• Flowers: Very large, with a diameter of 15–20 cm, with long, pointed petals arranged in several layers. The color is intense – bright pink-magenta, with lighter tones toward the center and slightly darker outer petals. The flowers are short-lived (lasting 1–2 days) but very showy and appear in waves spring and summer.

• Scent: Some specimens may emit a faint sweet fragrance, especially in the evening.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Prefers strong indirect light. Gentle morning sun is beneficial, but it should be protected from the strong midday sun which can burn the stems.

• Soil: Aerated and well-drained. A mix for epiphytic plants is recommended: peat + crushed bark + perlite or an adapted orchid substrate.

• Watering: Moderate. Water when the soil has slightly dried on the surface. During the resting period (autumn-winter), watering is significantly reduced.

• Humidity: Prefers medium to high atmospheric humidity, but tolerates dry indoor air if kept away from direct heat sources.

• Temperature: Ideal is a warm, stable temperature. Does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C. In winter, it is recommended to keep it in protected or bright indoor spaces.

• Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring–summer), fertilize every 2–4 weeks with fertilizer for flowering plants.

Note: Epiphyllum ‘Sarah Courant’ is a succulent plant with flat foliage, sensitive to knocks and scratches. Some leaves may show small scars, spots, or aesthetic defects that appeared during growth or transport. These imperfections do not affect the plant’s health and are not grounds for complaint – the plant is perfectly viable and continues to develop normally.
