Hippophae rhamnoides 'Nivelena', also known as Sea Buckthorn 'Nivelena', is an introduced cultivar of the species Hippophae rhamnoides from the Elaeagnaceae family. This deciduous perennial shrub is valued for its nutritious fruits, rich in vitamins, and its resistance to extreme conditions. Native to Eurasia, 'Nivelena' is a selection from the Polli Horticultural Research Center (Estonia), ideal for orchards, hedges, or fruit gardens, due to its productivity and adaptability.

Leaf and Flower Appearance

  • Leaves: The leaves are linear, narrow, 3-6 cm long, silvery green, with a smooth texture and entire margins. They are alternately arranged on branches, providing a dense and decorative appearance.
  • Flowers: The flowers are small, yellow-green, clustered in racemes, appearing early spring (March-April). They are inconspicuous but essential for pollination.

Fruit Appearance

  • Fruits: The fruits are small, oval, bright orange, with a juicy pulp rich in vitamins (especially C), antioxidants, and oils. They ripen in autumn (September-October), are edible, and used in food, cosmetics, or medicine. The harvest is abundant, with thousands of fruits per shrub.

Growth Characteristics

  • Height and Width: Reaches 2-4 meters in height and 1-2 meters in width, forming an erect, well-branched shrub with a rounded habit.
  • Vigor: Moderate growth, with spiny branches and dense development. It is dioecious, requiring male and female plants for pollination.
  • Type: Deciduous perennial shrub with deep roots.

Growing Conditions

  • Exposure: Prefers full sun for optimal fruiting. Tolerates partial shade but produces fewer fruits.
  • Soil: Grows in well-drained, poor, sandy or rocky soils, with neutral to alkaline pH (6.5-8.0). Tolerates saline and arid soils.
  • Watering: Water regularly in the first year, keeping the soil moist. Once established, it is drought tolerant.
  • Temperature: Hardy in zones 3-8 (down to -35°C), suitable for temperate climates, including Romania.

Care and Resistance

  • Resistance: Extremely resistant to cold, drought, poor soils, and pollution. Tolerates wind and salt, making it ideal for coastal or urban areas. Rarely affected by diseases or pests.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring if the soil is poor. Does not require frequent fertilization.
  • Pruning: Prune in spring, removing dead or crossed branches to maintain shape and stimulate growth. Tolerates severe pruning for rejuvenation.
  • Propagation: Propagated by stem cuttings or seeds in spring.
  • Warning: Spiny branches can cause scratches. Leaves and stems are not toxic.

Usage

Hippophae rhamnoides 'Nivelena' is ideal for fruit orchards, hedges, or ornamental gardens. The nutritious fruits are used in food, cosmetics, or medicine. It combines well with other hardy shrubs, such as willows or olives. Attracts pollinators, contributing to biodiversity.
