Trachycarpus fortunei is one of the best-known and hardiest palms cultivated in temperate climates, valued for its exotic appearance and ability to tolerate freezing temperatures better than most palms. It is commonly known as Wind Palm, Windmill Palm or Chusan Palm.

Over time, it forms an upright trunk covered with persistent brown fibers, while the crown consists of large, palmate, deep green leaves. Thanks to its tropical appearance and good cold tolerance, it is frequently used in gardens, yards, terraces and landscaping projects.

🌿 Botanical characteristics

  • Full name: Trachycarpus fortunei

  • Common names: Wind Palm, Windmill Palm, Chusan Palm

  • Family: Arecaceae

  • Plant type: evergreen palm

  • Upright trunk covered with brown fibers

  • Large, palmate leaves arranged in a crown

  • Evergreen foliage

  • Slow to moderate growth

  • Can be grown in the garden or in large containers

  • Mature specimens can reach several meters in height

☀️ Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers direct sunlight or bright partial shade. Young specimens may benefit from a position somewhat protected from very strong sunlight.

  • Substrate: fertile, loose and very well drained. It tolerates several soil types, but waterlogging must be avoided.

  • Watering: regular watering after planting and during hot or dry periods. Well-established plants become more tolerant of short periods of drought.

  • Fertilization: during the active growing period, it can be fertilized periodically with a product for palms or ornamental plants.

  • Container cultivation: it can be kept in large containers, but requires more regular watering and additional protection in winter.

  • Transplanting: gradual transfer to larger containers is recommended, without unnecessarily disturbing the roots.

  • Wind: tolerates wind relatively well, but very strong and constant exposure may cause the leaves to tear or split.

❄️ Resistance to low temperatures

Trachycarpus fortunei is one of the most cold-hardy palms grown ornamentally. Mature plants that are well established in the garden can tolerate, under favorable conditions, temperatures of approximately -15...-18°C, and sometimes even lower temperatures for short periods, if they are well acclimatized, protected from wind and grown in well-drained soil.

Young specimens are more sensitive to frost and benefit from protection during the first years after planting.

Plants grown in containers are much more vulnerable to freezing temperatures, as their roots are exposed to the cold. Containers should be protected, insulated or moved to a frost-free location during periods of very low temperatures.

🌱 Recommended substrate

For Trachycarpus fortunei, we recommend a fertile, airy and well-drained substrate that allows the root system to develop without waterlogging.

When planting in the garden, good drainage is particularly important for the plant's resistance during the cold season.

✨ What makes it special

  • one of the most cold-hardy palms;

  • spectacular tropical appearance;

  • can be grown permanently in the garden in many areas of Romania;

  • evergreen, decorative foliage all year round;

  • highly characteristic fibrous trunk;

  • suitable for gardens, yards and terraces;

  • adapts well to cultivation in large containers;

  • long-lived plant with strong visual impact.

📌 Note

The shape, size, number of leaves and degree of trunk development naturally vary from one specimen to another and depending on the plant's age.

Palm leaves may split, tear or bend naturally under the action of wind and may show dry edges or tips, spots, scratches or other aesthetic imperfections resulting from growth, handling, transport or adaptation to new environmental conditions. Older leaves gradually dry out and can be removed as they turn completely brown. These aspects do not normally affect the plant's viability.
