Pteris straminea, also known as Silver Lace Fern, Straw Fern, or Silver Fern, is an elegant and delicate fern native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It is distinguished by its fine, lacy leaves of deep green, with straw-colored petioles (stems), which is where the popular name "Straw Fern" comes from.

The plant grows moderately, forming compact clumps with airy and graceful fronds. It is one of the easier ferns to care for in the Pteris genus and is ideal for terrariums, small pots, or as a collector’s plant in high-humidity spaces.

Main features:

  • Fine, lacy leaves in an elegant green
  • Straw-colored petioles (stramineus) – a distinctive characteristic
  • Delicate and airy appearance
  • Moderate growth, suitable for small spaces
  • Mature size: 30 to 60 cm tall (under good conditions)

Easy care:

  • Light: medium to bright indirect light (avoid direct sun, which can burn the leaves)
  • Optimal temperature: warm, ideally 18–28°C. Does not tolerate long-term temperatures below 12–13°C
  • Watering: regular – keep the substrate slightly moist (do not let it dry out completely, but avoid overwatering)
  • Humidity: high (60–80%) – benefits from frequent misting or a terrarium/humidifier
  • Substrate: light, airy, and well-drained

Recommended substrate: For optimal growth and to maintain proper moisture without risking root rot, we recommend the Professional Substrate for Anthurium, Hoya, Bromeliaceae, and Ferns – SG Mix from Secret Garden. → Professional Substrate for Anthurium, Hoya, Bromeliaceae, and Ferns - Secret Garden

This substrate is rich, airy, and retains moisture well, making it ideal for ferns that prefer a consistently moist but well-drained environment.

Uses: Excellent for terrariums, small pots on windowsills, offices, bright bathrooms, or spaces with high humidity. Its delicate and elegant appearance makes it a great choice for collectors or for decorating indoor spaces in a tropical style.

Note: Like most ferns, Pteris straminea appreciates consistent humidity. Dry leaf tips usually result from air that is too dry. With stable humidity and indirect light conditions, the plant grows beautifully and remains decorative year-round.

An elegant fern with a delicate look and relatively easy care, perfect for tropical plant lovers and terrarium enthusiasts!
