Hitchcockii 'Dark Mystery'
Pilea hitchcockii 'Dark Mystery', sometimes known as Pilea involucrata 'Dark Mystery', is a gorgeous and unique houseplant with stunning dark foliage.
It is supposed to be a variety of the Pilea hitchcockii species native to Ecuador, recognized for:
- Dark, almost black leaves: The leaves can range from a bronze red to a dark green, sometimes even having a silvery sheen. This is the characteristic that gives the plant the name "Dark Mystery".
- Rapid growth: This plant grows quickly and easily, making it a good choice for beginners in plant care.
- Compact size: It usually only reaches a height of 15-20 cm, making it a great option for smaller spaces.
Here are some tips for its care:
-
Light : This plant prefers indirect, moderate to weak light. Dark leaves are adapted to absorb light in low light conditions, so avoid direct sunlight.
-
Watering : Watering should be done moderately. Wait for the top layer of soil to dry between waterings.
-
Humidity : Although it does well in normal ambient humidity, it appreciates a humidity boost. You can increase the humidity around the plant by occasional spraying or placing the pot on a tray of gravel and water, making sure the bottom of the pot does not touch the water.
-
Fertilizer : Use a balanced houseplant fertilizer, applied once a month during active growth (spring-summer).
-
Pot and soil : Choose a pot with adequate drainage and use a well-draining soil mix to prevent excessive water retention.
-
Pruning and maintenance : You can trim the tops of the plants to encourage bushier growth and maintain the desired shape.
