Helleborus is one of the easiest garden plants to care for, and its ability to bloom in the darkest months of the year, when everything is frozen.
Helleborus or Spanzul, will produce flowers from late autumn to early spring, hence the name Winter Rose or Christmas Rose, Spanz.

Description:

  • Leaves: The leaves are glossy, dark green, persistent during the winter. They have a textured appearance, which makes them decorative even when the plant is not in bloom.
  • Flowers: The flowers are large, in various colors, from white to pink, purple, green and yellow. They have a cup shape and can be single or double.
  • Flowering period: Blooms in winter or early spring, sometimes even when the ground is covered with snow.
  • Dimensions: Grows up to 30-45 cm in height and extends to approximately 60 cm in width.
  • Origin: It is native to the southern regions of Europe and Asia.

Care:

  1. Light:

    • It prefers semi-shade or partial shade. It is ideal for planting under trees or in areas protected from intense direct sun.
    • It can tolerate direct sun in regions with milder summers, but requires shade in hot areas.
  2. Soil:

    • It needs a well-drained soil, rich in humus and slightly alkaline. A clay soil is ideal.
  3. Watering:

    • Keeping the soil slightly moist is essential, especially during hot and dry periods.
    • Avoid excessive watering, which can cause root rot.
  4. Temperature:

    • It is very resistant to cold, withstanding temperatures up to -15°C or even lower.
    • It grows well in temperate areas, but must be protected during periods of intense frost.
  5. Fertilization:

    • Apply compost or organic fertilizer every spring to keep the soil rich in nutrients.
    • Avoid fertilizers rich in nitrogen, which can excessively stimulate the growth of foliage to the detriment of flowers.
  6. Cutting:

    • Remove dry or damaged leaves in late autumn or early spring, to stimulate the appearance of new leaves and flowers.
    • Cutting old leaves helps prevent fungal diseases.
  7. Moisture:

    • Although it tolerates moderate humidity, it is important that the air circulates well to prevent diseases.
