Full description and specifications

Sempervivum arachnoideum , also known as "Stone Spider" or "House Spider", is a perennial succulent plant, appreciated for its unique appearance and ease of care. It is part of the Crassulaceae family and is native to the mountain regions of Europe.

  • General appearance: Sempervivum arachnoideum forms compact rosettes of fleshy leaves, covered with fine white hairs, which give it the appearance of a spider. The rosettes can have a diameter of 1-3 cm, and the hairs help protect the plant from intense sun and water loss.
  • Leaves: The leaves are fleshy, triangular, green, reddish or purple, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
  • Flowers: The flowers are star-shaped, pink or red, and appear on tall stems, about 10-15 cm, during the summer. After flowering, the mother rosette dies, but leaves behind numerous young.
  • Roots: The plant develops a superficial root system, adapted to take water from short and rare rainfalls.

Care:

  1. Light: Sempervivum arachnoideum prefers sunny places. It can tolerate partial shade, but maximum exposure to the sun ensures intense coloration and compact growth.

  2. Soil: I prefer a well-drained, sandy or stony soil. It is important that the soil does not retain water to prevent root rot. A potting mix for cacti is ideal.

  3. Watering: Watering must be moderate. Sempervivum arachnoideum is resistant to drought and does not require frequent watering. During the summer, water the plant when the soil is completely dry. In winter, reduce watering to a minimum.

  4. Temperature: It is a cold-resistant plant and can tolerate low temperatures, even below -20°C. It adapts well to a wide range of temperatures, but prefers a temperate climate.

  5. Fertilization: Does not require frequent fertilization. A light application of fertilizer for cacti and succulents in the spring can be beneficial, but is not essential.

  6. Propagation: Sempervivum arachnoideum is easily propagated by separating the young that appear around the mother rosette. These seedlings can be planted directly in the prepared soil.

  7. Common problems: The main problem is excess water, which can lead to root rot. Make sure that the soil is well drained and that the plant is not standing in water. Also monitor the plant for pests such as aphids or slugs, although these are usually not a major problem.

  • Resistance: Due to its resistance to drought and cold, it is an ideal plant for areas with difficult environmental conditions.

Sempervivum arachnoideum is a beautiful and easy-care plant, perfect for adding a decorative element to your garden or succulent collection.
