Sempervivum arachnoideum, also known as the "Stone Spider" or "House Spider," is a perennial succulent plant valued for its unique appearance and ease of care. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family and originates from the mountainous regions of Europe.

  • General appearance: Sempervivum arachnoideum forms compact rosettes of fleshy leaves covered with fine white hairs, giving it a spider-like look. The rosettes can measure 1-3 cm in diameter, and the hairs help protect the plant from intense sunlight and water loss.
  • Leaves: The leaves are fleshy, triangular, and can be green, reddish, or purplish, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
  • Flowers: The flowers are star-shaped, pink or red, and appear on tall stems about 10-15 cm high during summer. After flowering, the mother rosette dies but leaves behind numerous offsets.
  • Roots: The plant develops a shallow root system adapted to absorb water from brief and rare rainfall.

Care:

  1. Light: Sempervivum arachnoideum prefers sunny spots. It can tolerate partial shade, but full sun exposure ensures intense coloration and compact growth.

  2. Soil: It prefers well-drained, sandy or rocky soil. It is important that the soil does not retain water to prevent root rot. A cactus soil mix is ideal.

  3. Watering: Watering should be moderate. Sempervivum arachnoideum is drought-resistant and does not require frequent watering. In summer, water the plant when the soil is completely dry. In winter, reduce watering to a minimum.

  4. Temperature: It is a cold-hardy plant and can tolerate low temperatures, even below -20°C. It adapts well to a wide range of temperatures but prefers a temperate climate.

  5. Fertilizing: Frequent fertilizing is not necessary. A light application of fertilizer for cacti and succulents in spring can be beneficial but is not essential.

  6. Propagation: Sempervivum arachnoideum easily propagates by separating the offsets that appear around the mother rosette. These offsets can be planted directly into prepared soil.

  7. Common problems: The main issue is overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Ensure the soil is well-drained and the plant does not sit in water. Also, monitor the plant for pests such as aphids or slugs, although these are usually not a major problem.

  • Hardiness: Due to its resistance to drought and cold, it is an ideal plant for areas with harsh environmental conditions.

Sempervivum arachnoideum is a beautiful and easy-to-care-for plant, perfect for adding a decorative element to your garden or succulent collection.
