The Paphiopedilum Debbie Robinson orchid is the result of crossing the species Paphiopedilum appletonianum × Paphiopedilum wardii.
The genus name comes from the city of Paphos in Cyprus, dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite (also known as Paphia), where legend says she was born from the sea foam, combined with the word pedilon (ancient Greek), meaning sandal or slipper. The name of the orchids in this genus, in Romanian, namely Venus's Slipper, is a translation of the scientific name.
