Hoya ranauensis - full pots

Hoya ranauensis is an accepted botanical species, published in 2014 by T. Green and Kloppenburg, native to Sabah, Borneo. It circulated for around two decades as Hoya sp. Poring Hot Springs, after the type locality. It is a vine with oval, glossy, deep green foliage and dark veins, of the finlaysonii type. Under good growing conditions, it forms globose umbels with small, star-shaped flowers, creamy white in the center and burgundy at the tips. The fragrance is subtle, with a lemon scent.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are oval or elliptic, firm and glossy, with dark veins against a green background. This vein pattern brings it commercially close to the finlaysonii group; it is not the same species as Hoya finlaysonii or Hoya vitellinoides. It has a vining growth habit. It does not have splash or variegation. Shoot length and branching vary from one batch to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The gallery shows a globose umbel with small, star-shaped flowers: the center is creamy white, while the tips of the lobes are burgundy. The fragrance is horticulturally confirmed as subtle, with a lemon scent. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted name is Hoya ranauensis T.Green & Kloppenb., published in Hoya New 2(3): 21 (2014). The type comes from the Poring Hot Springs area, Ranau District, Sabah. The accepted native range is Borneo (Sabah). The epithet honors Ranau District.
