Hoya clemensiorum (Dark Leaf)

Hoya clemensiorum (Dark Leaf) is a label for plants of the species Hoya clemensiorum selected for darker foliage. The leaves are thick, lanceolate, deep green, with sunken veins. The species is a vine native to Borneo. Dark Leaf is not a separate taxon and is not the same as the lot sold as short leaf or as sp. Sumatra. Under good growing conditions, cream-colored, star-shaped umbels with reddish-brown margins may appear. The flowers are fragrant. Blooming depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage. The foliage is firm and elliptic-lanceolate, with a prominent midrib and raised lateral veins that are darker against the green background. Dark Leaf describes only the more saturated color of the leaf blade. The plants in this lot are young; mature leaves of the species may become much longer. This is not the short leaf form.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers of the species are star-shaped, with reflexed lobes, creamy yellow toward the center and reddish-brown at the margins, with a cream-colored corona. They appear in dense umbels. They are fragrant; we do not assign a single definitive scent note. Blooming depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted name is Hoya clemensiorum T.Green, published in 2001. Its native range is Borneo. Dark Leaf, short leaf, and sp. Sumatra remain commercial labels for separate SKUs. This species should not be confused with unpublished Hoya sp. Aceh.
