Pachira Aquatica, called the Malabar Chestnut or Money Tree, is a durable plant, easily adapting to various conditions, but the right amount of water, light, and fertilization will help it develop to its maximum capacity.

It is native to tropical regions of Central and South America, up to northern Brazil. The name comes from an old Guyanese Indian language and means "sweet water nuts". It also grows in other wet places, such as along rivers, in swamps, and in wet mountain forests. In the wild, it can reach a height of 20 meters and features huge yellow-petaled flowers that turn into oval brown fruits - these can reach a length of 30 cm and inside them are nuts that can be used as a substitute for cocoa.

Pachira - the money tree

Although this plant originates from America, it is currently most popular in Taiwan. Feng Shui practitioners believe it creates "chi", a positive energy that brings luck into homes and usually decorate it with various ornaments to enhance this ability.

The legend that gave it the name "Money Tree" says that the plant will bring great wealth to its owner, and the trunks are usually braided to "lock" luck and wealth inside the house.

According to the feng shui tradition from China, the leaves, which resemble green hands, capture happiness and luck, while the twisted stems store the treasure.

In Asia, the plant is also called "Money Tree", being a traditional house gift that brings luck and happiness. In China, the number five represents the 5 elements, popularizing the five-finger leaves of the Pachira. It is said that the effect is enhanced by placing five plants in a (red) pot or by intertwining five trunks.
