Foliage and growth. The leaves are lanceolate, long and narrow, green, with prominent veins and no silver spots. In good light, the foliage may develop pigmentation; this coloration is not variegation. In this batch, a young specimen with a long shoot and several opposite blades, in a nursery pot. The growth habit is vine-like. Shoot length varies from one specimen to another. The plant may be considered a Hoya cactus—it requires less frequent watering and has moderate growth. The buds are sensitive to temperature and may drop due to major temperature fluctuations or cold drafts.
Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and cup- or umbel-shaped. When they open, they are pale yellow, almost transparent; over the following days, the yellow intensifies. In this batch, a dense, creamy-yellow umbel with a yellow corona and reddish pedicels. In cultivation, the umbels may have around 10–25 flowers, measuring approximately 1.2 cm. The flowering period is short, usually lasting a few days. The plant is sold as a fragrant plant; some growers do not detect the fragrance. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.
Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya blashernaezii Kloppenb., published in 1999 in Fraterna. The species is native to the Philippines. The nominate subspecies is Hoya blashernaezii subsp. The name honors Blas Hernaez. IML 1631 is a collection number. It is not subsp. valmayoriana.
