Dischidia major 'Rattle Skulls'
€17,95
Dischidia major 'Rattle Skulls' - a botanical species of dischidia that develops two types of leaves. Some leaves at the tips of the vines are small, round, and fleshy, while the leaves at the base are large, swollen, and hollow inside.
In nature, the large hollow leaves at the base of the plant provide an ideal home for ant nests - in return, the plant feeds on the nutrients produced by the ant colony. At the same time, the ant colonies protect the plant from possible pests, being very aggressive towards any intruder. This phenomenon is called "myrmecophily" and refers to the association between ants and various plant species (as well as other insects, fungi, etc.), quite common in nature.
The vines can be hanging or climbing, and at maturity can reach lengths of several meters.
The flowers are small, urn-shaped, and appear in groups of 4-5.
The plant thrives in conditions of medium or high humidity - lack of atmospheric moisture can be compensated with fine, periodic misting, but good air circulation/ventilation of the growing space is necessary. Repotting should be done annually, taking into account the plant's development. Fertilization can be done with a product dedicated to orchids, at 25-50% of the concentration indicated on the package.
The roots of this species are finer - special attention should be given to the moisture in the substrate to avoid their rotting.
Common names for Dischidia major 'Rattle Skulls': Malaysian Urn Vine, ‘Rattle Skulls’ or ‘Ant Plant’.
The decorative pot is not included in the price.
