Cattleya dowiana * fragrant
Cattleya dowiana - botanical species found in Costa Rica and Panama. It is a medium-sized epiphytic orchid that grows in moderate to warm temperatures. The plant inhabits the treetops of the Caribbean coast, at altitudes between 250 and 1200 meters. It has stick-shaped pseudobulbs, with heights ranging from 8 to 20 cm, which show prominent veins when dehydrated. When young, these pseudobulbs are partially covered by basal sheaths that decompose with the passage of time. Each pseudobulb bears a single fleshy leaf, elliptical-oblong in shape and light green in color. The plant blooms mainly in late summer and autumn, developing a terminal inflorescence of approximately 12.5 cm in length, which appears on a mature pseudobulb. The inflorescence bears between 5 and 6 flowers, with a strong and complex fragrance reminiscent of lemon, spices and vanilla. The flowers are large, extremely spectacular, with a lip in shades of cyclamen-magenta or garnet that presents prominent yellow venation.
The plants in the stock have 2 leaves.
Flower size: approx. 15 cm
