Full description and specifications

Opuntia jamaicensis, also known as Jamaica cactus, is a species of cactus from the genus Opuntia, native to Jamaica and nearby islands. This plant is adapted to dry and hot environments and is appreciated for its distinctive shape and resistance to difficult environmental conditions.

Size and shape : Opuntia jamaicensis grows in the form of flat, segmented stems, called cladodes. This plant can reach heights of up to 1-1.5 meters (3-5 feet). The cladodes have an oval to rounded shape and are covered with small spines called glochids.

Leaves : Like other Opuntia species, Opuntia jamaicensis has small, temporary leaves that fall quickly, leaving the cladodes to perform photosynthetic functions.

Flowers : The flowers of Opuntia jamaicensis are yellow, with petals arranged around a center with numerous stamens. These flowers appear on the edges of the cladodes in the warm season.

Fruits : The fruits produced by Opuntia jamaicensis are round or oval, red or dark purple in color. The fruits are edible and can be eaten raw or used in culinary preparations.

Cultivation : Jamaica cactus is a drought-resistant plant and prefers well-drained soils and exposure to full sun. It is an ideal plant for xeriscaping and cactus gardens.

Cold resistance : Opuntia jamaicensis is not very cold resistant and can be affected by low temperatures. It is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 9-11, where temperatures do not drop below -6.7 degrees Celsius.
