Hoya wallichii - large fragrant flowers (mature specimens)

Hoya wallichii is an accepted species with thin, elliptic-lanceolate foliage and large, campanulate, cream-white flowers with a purple corona. The species is native to the southern Malay Peninsula and Borneo, where it grows as a climbing subshrub or lithophyte in the humid tropical biome. The title retains the commercial note of fragrant flowers. This plant is sensitive to transport and temperature fluctuations inside the box. A rewarding houseplant with simple care requirements.

Foliage and growth. The shoots are thin. The leaves are thin, flexible, elliptic-lanceolate, glossy, with visible veins and no hairs. Unlike Hoyas with fleshy foliage, this species does not store water in the leaf blade. Shoot length varies from one specimen to another. The specimens described in the title reflect the commercial stage of the batch, not a guaranteed size.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are campanulate and large compared with those of most Hoyas. The corolla is cream-white; the corona is purple, with kidney-shaped lobes. Usually, only one flower opens at a time in the inflorescence. The title retains the commercial note of fragrant flowers; perceived intensity varies in cultivation, so we do not promise a unique fragrance profile. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity and origin. The accepted name is Hoya wallichii (Wight) C.M.Burton, based on Physostelma wallichii Wight (1834). It is not synonymous with Hoya campanulata; the two differ in the number of open flowers and in the shape and colour of the corona. The name was also incorrectly applied to material later identified as Hoya danumensis. It has no native range.
