Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae 'Variegata' - mature specimens

Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae 'Variegata' is the horticultural name used for an unpublished Philippine Hoya species, similar in appearance to Hoya burtoniae but distinct from it in the collector plant trade. It has a compact, trailing habit, while its pubescent foliage may combine green, cream, pink, and reddish shades on young growth. The small, dark red flowers have a yellow corona and a sweet fragrance described as honey-like or caramel-like. The variegation means that each vine and each specimen has its own unique pattern.

Name and identification

The abbreviation sp. aff. burtoniae indicates an as-yet-unidentified plant with affinities to Hoya burtoniae; it is not the name of a published species. Hoya sp. DS-70 is a collector name historically used for plants in this group, not a botanical synonym. The names Hoya bilobata and Hoya tsangii have been incorrectly applied to this plant in the trade.

'Variegata' is the commercial name for the variegated form. The plant should not be confused with Hoya burtoniae, a botanically accepted species that typically has smaller, thinner leaves with less prominent venation.

Foliage and variegation

The leaves are pubescent, relatively thick, and pointed, with visible venation. Green areas alternate with cream or white sections, while young growth may temporarily display pink to reddish tones. The intensity and distribution of the variegation naturally vary; some vines may partially or completely revert to green.

Flowers and fragrance

The flowers are small and almost spherical, with a dark pink to red corolla and a yellow corona with a reddish center. They are grouped in compact umbels, produce nectar, and have a sweet fragrance with caramel or honey-like notes. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.
