Hoya pauciflora - fragrant flowers

Hoya pauciflora is a climbing species from southwestern India and Sri Lanka, valued for its narrow, dark green foliage and unusually large flowers in relation to its leaves. The stems can be left trailing or guided onto a support, while the linear leaves create a fine, airy silhouette. The white flowers, with a reddish-purple center, usually appear singly or in pairs and are fragrant. Its delicate appearance clearly distinguishes it from Hoya species with dense umbels.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya pauciflora Wight is an accepted botanical name, published in 1848. The species is native to southwestern India and Sri Lanka, where it grows as an epiphytic or lithophytic vine in the humid tropical biome.

Foliage and growth habit. The leaves are very narrow, approximately 3–9 cm long and up to 1 cm wide, usually dark green, sometimes slightly curved, with a sunken central vein. The plant can be grown as a trailing specimen or trained onto a support.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers have white corollas and red to deep purple coronas. Unlike species that form abundant umbels, Hoya pauciflora frequently produces one or two flowers at the leaf axil. Botanical and horticultural sources indicate flowers measuring approximately 1.2–2.5 cm, which are fragrant and may remain open for nearly two weeks. The exact fragrance notes and intensity may vary.
