Hoya magnifica

Hoya magnifica is a climbing species native to Papua New Guinea, appreciated for its large, pubescent foliage and white, waxy flowers with a slightly cupped shape. A mature plant can develop vigorous vines, a broad growth habit, and abundant inflorescences. The flowers are large and fragrant, but the character of the fragrance is perceived differently by each observer. The mature appearance is dominated by the large leaves and vigorous growth.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are large, thick, and covered with fine hairs, giving them a velvety texture and a matte appearance. Horticultural sources frequently describe leaves approximately 13–16 cm long and 6–8 cm wide, with a clearly defined midrib. The foliage may develop reddish tones in bright light. Growth is vigorous, with long, flexible vines.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are almost entirely white, with a subtle red area beneath the corona, and are generally approximately 4–5 cm in diameter. An inflorescence often contains 10–20 flowers, while some specimens may produce approximately 25. Under favorable conditions, the flowers may last for nearly two weeks. The fragrance is noticeable, but sensory descriptions vary considerably, from pleasant to heavy; its intensity and notes cannot be guaranteed to be identical for every plant or flowering.

Botanical identity and origin. The accepted botanical name is Hoya magnifica P.I.Forst. & Liddle, published in 1992. The older trade name Hoya sp. New Guinea White may appear in collections, but it does not replace the accepted botanical name.
