Hoya lauterbachii - huge, fragrant flowers

Hoya lauterbachii is a vine from New Guinea, sought after for producing some of the largest flowers in the genus. The foliage in this batch is elliptical, glossy, and dark green, with lighter shoots. It has a climbing habit and becomes robust with age. The flowers are cup-shaped and velvety, in shades ranging from coral pink to cream, with a light-colored center. They are fragrant. In horticulture, the species is placed in section Eriostemma. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are opposite, elliptical, thick, pointed, and glossy. Pubescence is not evident on the young specimens in this batch. The stem extends and requires support as it matures. Vine length varies from one specimen to another. A young specimen has a short vine, not the several-meter growth habit of an adult specimen.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are large, cup-shaped, and velvety in texture. In this batch, an umbel has coral-pink to cream corollas and a small corona that is darker at the center; the color is not fixed at species level. Horticultural sources indicate flowers of approximately 7–8 cm and umbels with around 7–8 flowers at maturity. The fragrance is present; some cultivation descriptions associate it with sweet chocolate notes, but its intensity varies. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya lauterbachii K.Schum., published in 1896. The species is native to New Guinea and grows in a humid tropical biome. Eriostemma lauterbachii is a synonym, not a separate genus on this listing. In horticulture, it remains in section Eriostemma.
