Hoya kloppenburgii

Hoya kloppenburgii is a climbing species from Borneo, with rigid, lanceolate, green foliage, often featuring silver splash and a purplish underside. The leaves may become darker or purplish in brighter filtered light, while the margins are noticeably thickened. Under good growing conditions, the plant produces flat or slightly concave umbels with small, golden-yellow flowers, sometimes with pink accents and a yellow corona. The peduncles are long, and the flowers are fragrant. The plant is offered as a rooted cutting with 1–2 leaves.

Foliage and growth. The species has a liana-like or climbing shrub habit and produces rigid, lanceolate leaves with a firm texture. The foliage is green, often speckled with silver splash; the underside may be purplish or spotted, while in brighter filtered light the upper surface may also develop purplish tones. The leaf margins are thickened. Growth from a cutting is slow at first.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and unusual, with a golden-yellow corolla, sometimes with pink accents, and a yellow corona. They appear in flat or slightly concave umbels on long peduncles. The flowers are fragrant; the intensity and perception of the fragrance may vary during blooming and between specimens.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya kloppenburgii T.Green is an accepted botanical name, published in 2001 and dedicated to Dale Kloppenburg. The species is native to Sabah and Brunei, in Borneo, where it grows as a climbing shrub in a humid tropical biome.

The plant retains its commercial presentation as a rooted cutting with 1–2 leaves.
