Hoya imbricata Decne. is a spectacular epiphytic species native to the Philippines and Sulawesi, where it grows on tree trunks in humid tropical forests. Its distinctive feature is its “shingling” growth habit: the almost round leaves overlap and conform to the supporting surface, forming chambers where ants may take shelter in the wild. The plant uses the support for attachment, not as a food source, and its sculptural appearance makes it one of the most unusual collector Hoyas.

Distinctive foliage and growth habit

The leaves are large, almost circular, convex and leathery, usually pale green to marbled green, sometimes with purple tones on the underside. The margins adhere to bark or a rigid support, while a network of roots develops beneath each leaf to anchor the plant and take advantage of moisture in the protected microspace. For the characteristic growth habit to develop properly, the vines should be guided along bark, cork or a rigid vertical support; without support, the leaves may curl or overlap irregularly.

The species is myrmecophilous: the arched leaves create shelter for ants, while organic debris accumulating beneath them may contribute nutrients. This association describes the natural habitat and does not mean that the plant requires ants when cultivated.

Flowers and fragrance

The inflorescences are umbels with numerous small flowers, featuring a cream-white corolla, reflexed triangular lobes and fine hairs on the inner surface. The fragrance is inconsistently documented: some horticultural sources describe it as weak or subtle, while other descriptions report flowers with no perceptible scent. For this reason, fragrance intensity cannot be guaranteed and may vary between plants, time of day and growing conditions.

Large specimens, full pots

The product includes large, well-developed specimens in rich “full pots”, selected for their mass of foliage and decorative impact. The length of the vines varies from one specimen to another, depending on the season, natural growth rate and production batch.

Potting mix and care guide

Potting mix: use an airy, well-draining mix suitable for epiphytic species. We recommend the professional potting mix for Hoya and Anthurium - SG Mix.
