Hoya danumensis - fragrant flowers

Hoya danumensis is an accepted species, published in 2009, native to Borneo and Sumatra. Its name comes from the Danum Valley in Sabah. It is an epiphytic or lithophytic vine with thin, elliptical foliage, prominent veins, and a few silver spots. The flowers are white and cup-shaped, with a white corona and a subtle fragrance. It was long circulated incorrectly as Hoya wallichii.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are thin and elliptical, usually 8–13 cm long and 3–6 cm wide, with prominent veins on the underside and a few silver spots. The shoots are thin. The thin foliage makes the plant more sensitive to drying out and transportation than species with thick leaves.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are white, cup- or bell-shaped, with a white corona. Horticultural sources describe them as reaching approximately 4 cm across when open, in umbels of around 10–15 flowers. The degree of opening varies: sometimes they remain more closed, while at other times they form broad, slightly reflexed cups. The fragrance is subtle. An inflorescence remains decorative for several days.

Identity. Hoya danumensis Rodda & Nyhuus is an accepted species. The type originates from the Danum Valley, Sabah. Its accepted range includes Borneo and Sumatra. The plant was sold for a long time as Hoya wallichii; the two species are distinct.

The height, including the pot, is approximately 25 cm. The decorative pot is not included in the price.

This species is sensitive to long transportation times and large temperature fluctuations. After an extended journey in a box, root or leaf loss may occur; ordering involves this risk.
