Full description and specifications

Epiphyllum 'Leon Herrick' is a hybrid variety of epiphytic cactus, known for its spectacular and colorful flowers. This plant is often called "orchid cactus" because of its large and beautiful flowers, which resemble those of orchids. It is a popular indoor plant due to its ornamental appearance and abundant flowering.

Description:

  • Leaves: The leaves are actually flat, juicy, deep green stems that grow in segments. These stems can reach lengths of 30-60 cm and have slightly jagged or wavy edges.
  • Flowers: The flowers are large, spectacular, with a diameter of 15-20 cm or more. The flowers appear at the ends of the stems and usually bloom at night, although they can remain open during the day.
  • Stems: The stems are succulent, flat and segmented, creating an interesting architectural appearance. They are able to support large flowers without problems.

Care:

Light: Epiphyllum 'Leon Herrick' prefers indirect light, a bright area. It can also tolerate filtered light or partial shade. Exposure to strong, indirect light will stimulate flowering. Avoid direct exposure to intense sunlight, which can cause burns on the stems.

Soil: Prefers a well-drained, aerated soil rich in organic matter. An orchid soil mix, combined with perlite or pine bark, is ideal to provide the necessary drainage. Add organic matter to improve soil fertility.

Watering: Watering must be moderate. During the period of active growth (spring and summer), keep the soil evenly moist, but not saturated. In winter, reduce watering, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Temperature: Epiphyllum 'Leon Herrick' prefers temperatures between 18-24°C. It can tolerate lower temperatures, but it should not be exposed to frost. Avoid exposure to cold air currents and protect the plant from sudden temperature changes.

Humidity: The plant prefers a moderate to high level of humidity. In dry air conditions, periodically spray the stems with water or use a humidifier to maintain the necessary humidity.

Fertilization: Fertilize the plant once every 4-6 weeks during the period of active growth (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer for indoor plants, diluted to half the recommended concentration. Reduce fertilization during autumn and winter. A light fertilization once a month is sufficient during the period of active growth.

Propagation: Epiphyllum 'Leon Herrick' is easily propagated by stem cuttings. Cut segments of the stem approximately 10-15 cm long. Make sure that the stem segments are planted in a vertical position, with the lower part in the soil.
