Rhynchostylis Gigantea 'Big Pink'

Rhynchostylis gigantea is an Asian monopodial orchid, valued for its dense inflorescences and the strong fragrance of its flowers. The plant matures slowly, with broad leaves and vigorous aerial roots; good flowering comes from a stable, well-lit specimen, not from forcing it with fertilizer.

Light and temperature. Choose a very bright location with filtered light and gentle morning sun after acclimatization. Light green leaves without dry spots indicate balance. Warm room temperatures are suitable, but gentle airflow and moderate differences between day and night help the plant remain sturdy.

Watering and roots. Water thoroughly when the roots turn silvery, then let the water drain completely. Aerial roots should not be cut and must not be kept constantly wet. Water left between the leaves or in the cachepot can affect the plant’s base; proper watering followed by partial drying is preferable.

Fertilizing. During the active growing period, apply diluted orchid fertilizer after watering. New leaves and green root tips are good signs; high doses do not safely speed up flowering.

Pot and repotting. A very well-ventilated pot, basket, or mounted culture is suitable. Repot only when new roots appear and use airy orchid potting mix; keep the container close to the volume of the roots.

Flowering and practical signs. Flower spikes appear on a mature plant receiving the right amount of light. Very dark leaves and slow growth indicate too much shade; yellow-brown spots indicate overly harsh sun. Soft roots or an affected base indicate excess water and insufficient ventilation.
