Rebutia muscula
€3,95
Rebutia muscula is a small, round cactus native to South America (Bolivia and Argentina). It is popular among cactus collectors due to its attractive appearance and colorful flowers.
Description:
- Shape: Rebutia muscula is a small, spherical or slightly flattened cactus, rarely exceeding 4-5 cm in diameter. It usually grows as a single globe but can form dense clusters of plants over time.
- Color: The cactus body is dark green, completely covered with fine white spines resembling a layer of fur, giving it a soft and fluffy look.
- Spines: This cactus is known for its fine, thin, white spines that form a dense, almost silky structure.
- Flowers: Rebutia muscula produces striking flowers, large compared to the plant’s size, in bright orange or red-orange hues. The flowers generally appear in spring or summer at the base of the plant.
- Roots: It has small roots that do not penetrate deeply into the soil, meaning it adapts well to small pots.
Care:
-
Light: This species prefers very bright places, but direct sunlight, especially at midday, can cause burns. Intense indirect light or filtered sun is recommended. It can be placed on a bright windowsill but shielded from direct sun rays.
-
Temperature: Rebutia muscula prefers moderate temperatures, between 18-26°C during summer. In winter, it can tolerate lower temperatures, even down to 5-10°C, if kept completely dry. This cold resting period is essential to encourage flowering in the next season.
-
Watering: Watering should be moderate, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing period (spring and summer), watering can be done once a week but sparingly. In winter, the cactus enters dormancy, and watering should be reduced or stopped entirely.
-
Soil: Rebutia muscula prefers well-drained soil, specially made for cacti, with a mix of sand and perlite to aid water drainage. Soil that is too rich or retains too much water can cause root rot.
-
Fertilizing: A liquid fertilizer made for cacti can be applied once a month during the growing period. The fertilizer should be low in nitrogen to prevent excessive growth and deformation of the plant.
-
Repotting: Since it is a small cactus, repotting is not often necessary. It can be done every 2-3 years when the plant seems to outgrow its pot or if the soil becomes too compacted. Use a small pot, as its roots do not need much space.
-
Flowering: To encourage flowering, it is important to provide a resting period during winter when watering is reduced or stopped and the plant is kept at lower temperatures. This rest cycle stimulates the development of flower buds in spring.
-
Air: Rebutia muscula appreciates good air circulation, especially if kept indoors. A well-ventilated space helps prevent fungal diseases or mold.
