Hoya neoebudica (Golden Wax Plant)

Hoya neoebudica (Golden Wax Plant) is an accepted species native to Vanuatu (formerly the New Hebrides). It is recognized by its green, often three-veined foliage and its flowers in shades of gold, peach, and orange. Golden Wax Plant is the trade name used for this species because of the flower color; it is not a separate taxon and does not replace the botanical name. It should not be confused with Wax Plant, the generic common name for the genus or for Hoya carnosa. It has a vining habit and vigorous growth in cultivation.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are green and medium-sized, with visible venation; horticultural sources often describe them as three-veined and lighter green in color. In bright light, the foliage may develop a more saturated coloration. The habit is climbing or trailing, making it suitable for a support or hanging basket. Growth is described horticulturally as vigorous, with relatively slender vines.

Flowers and fragrance. The buds may emerge golden-brown. The open corolla is peach to orange, with a beige-yellow corona, sometimes with pink accents. The flowers are grouped in umbels and are fragrant; cultivation observations note a mild, sweet, fruity fragrance. Intensity and coloration may vary between blooms. Flowering is not guaranteed.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya neoebudica Guillaumin is the accepted name, published in 1937. The trade spelling Hoya neo-ebudica refers to the same species, not to a different taxon. Golden Wax Plant is a label also used by North American nurseries for this plant. Commercial importation from Taiwan does not represent its natural range.
