Hoya mindorensis PG-12 - fragrant

Hoya mindorensis PG-12 is a commercial lot of the species, marked with the PG-12 label. The species is native from the Philippines to northern and central Borneo. It has flexible shoots and glossy, elliptic to elongated-oval leaves with visible veins. In intense light, the foliage may develop reddish tones; this coloration is not variegation. The flowers are borne in dense umbels, with reflexed corollas and fine hairs, and are described as fragrant. PG-12 is neither a taxon nor a registered cultivar. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth habit. The leaves are glossy, elliptic or elongated-oval, with a prominent midrib. In bright light, the leaf blade may turn reddish; this cultural response is not variegation. The growth habit is that of an epiphytic vine. The shoots can be trained onto a support or left trailing. Vine length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The umbels are compact and nearly spherical. The corolla reflexes backward and is covered with fine, translucent hairs. The corona is star-shaped. The PG-12 lot is described as having a pink corolla, a corona with red tips and a white center, and a noticeable fragrance. Color varies within the mindorensis complex; this lot label should not be confused with the Pink selection. The species may flower even while the plants are still young. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya mindorensis Schltr., published in 1906. Its native range extends from the Philippines to northern and central Borneo; it is not limited to the Philippines alone. The title retains the PG-12 selection.
