Hoya heuschkeliana
Hoya heuschkeliana is a compact species from the Philippines, with small, thick, ovate to obovate foliage. The leaves may develop reddish hues in bright light. Under good growing conditions, it produces umbels of waxy, urn- or bell-shaped, fragrant flowers, differing from the star-shaped form of many other Hoyas. The flowers may be pink or yellow; this batch is not reserved for a single color. It has a short, trailing growth habit, suitable for growing on a support or left to cascade.
Foliage and growth. The foliage is small, thick, ovate to obovate, and slightly curved, with a lighter underside. In cultivation, the leaves are usually reported to be around 3–7 cm long and 2–3 cm wide; in bright light, they may remain smaller and develop reddish tones. The vine is slender, suitable for growing on a support or trailing. This batch contains a compact, green specimen without variegation. Vine length varies from one specimen to another.
Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are waxy, urn- or bell-shaped, and grouped in umbels. The gallery shows both pink and yellow umbels. An inflorescence remains decorative for about a week. The fragrance is most often described as having caramel notes; perception may vary. In cultivation, flowering is reported mainly during the warm season and is encouraged by bright, at least partially filtered light. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.
Identity. Hoya heuschkeliana Kloppenb. is an accepted species, published in 1989, native to the Philippines, where it grows as an epiphytic or lithophytic vine in a humid tropical biome. The title retains the species name. In catalogs, it is also sold under the common names Madonna lily, wax flower, or porcelain flower. The name is sometimes also used for Hoya bella. The decorative pot is not included in the price.
