Hoya coronaria - huge, fragrant flowers

Hoya coronaria is a vigorous vine from southern Thailand and western and central Malesia, with thick, light green, elliptic foliage that is slightly pubescent on the underside. It has a climbing, branching habit and grows considerably before its first flowering in cultivation. The flowers are large for the genus, star-shaped, waxy, and especially fragrant at night. The color ranges from creamy white and yellow to pink or red, sometimes with spots.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is elliptic and thick, with slightly recurved margins and a pubescent underside. The vine is vigorous and branches readily.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are star-shaped and waxy, grouped in umbels. In this batch, the form has pinkish-cream flowers with burgundy spots and a cream corona with a dark center; at species level, the color is not fixed. They are especially fragrant at night, though the intensity may vary. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya coronaria Blume, published in 1826–1827. The species is native to Thailand, Malaya, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, and the Philippines. In horticulture, it is placed in section Eriostemma; Eriostemma coronarium is a synonym, not a separate genus on this page.
