Hoya campanulata

Hoya campanulata is an unusual species with an epiphytic shrub-like growth habit, native to West Malesia. The foliage is relatively thin, dark green, and elliptic, with prominent veins and sometimes subtle spots. The flowers are bell- or cup-shaped, 2–3 cm in size, creamy white, with a white corona and a red dot in the center. They appear in clusters of 10–15 on mature plants. The fragrance is subtle, with a citrus note. Unlike many climbing hoyas, the stems remain more shrub-like.

Foliage and growth. The plant grows as an epiphytic shrub, with slender stems and elliptic, dark green leaves with prominent veins. The foliage is less succulent than that of many other hoyas and may have subtle spots. Regular watering helps, but significant temperature fluctuations can cause buds and leaves to drop.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are bell-shaped, 2–3 cm in size, creamy white, with a white corona and a red dot in the center. On mature plants, they appear in clusters of 10–15 on each peduncle. The fragrance is subtle and reminiscent of citrus; its intensity may vary throughout the blooming period and between individual plants.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya campanulata Blume is an accepted botanical name, published in 1826. In the past, it also circulated as Cystidianthus laurifolius or Hoya cystiantha; taxonomists retain it in the genus Hoya. Its native range is West Malesia: Sumatra, Java, the Malay Peninsula, and Borneo.
