The plant is covered with short and stiff thorns, which can vary in color, from yellow-white to dark brown. Thorns are arranged around the body of the cactus, giving it a prickly appearance.
This cactus prefers well-drained soil and exposure to direct sunlight. It is adapted to arid conditions and can survive periods of drought. Gymnocalycium pflanzii is prized in cactus and succulent collections for its compact shape and attractive flowers.
