Rossioglossum Rawdon Jester 'Great Bee'

Rossioglossum Rawdon Jester ‘Great Bee’ is a large-flowered hybrid with well-defined yellow-brown contrasting patterns. It is one of the orchids that shows its potential when provided with good light, moving air, and a clump of mature pseudobulbs; a very young specimen first needs time to build up its reserves.

Light. Bright, filtered light is essential. An east- or west-facing window, protected during the hottest hours, is suitable. Very dark leaves, thin pseudobulbs, and a lack of flowering indicate insufficient light. Dry yellow-brown patches indicate direct sunlight that is too strong or was introduced too abruptly.

Temperature and ventilation. The plant prefers intermediate to cool conditions, with slightly cooler nights when possible. Do not keep it next to a radiator or in a warm, poorly ventilated room. Gentle air circulation helps the leaves dry after watering and limits problems with the base or roots.

Watering. During active growth, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to approach dryness between waterings. The pseudobulbs should not be allowed to remain wrinkled for weeks, but they should not be kept in a heavy, waterlogged pot either. In winter or during periods of low light, reduce the frequency according to the actual drying rate.

Fertilizing. Apply diluted fertilizer for orchids during the active season, after watering. Small, consistent doses support the pseudobulbs better than infrequent, concentrated fertilization. Firm new growth and roots with green tips are good signs.

Substrate and repotting. Repot when new roots appear or when the bark has broken down, using an airy orchid substrate. Choose a stable pot close to the volume of the roots. Do not divide a small plant frequently: several pseudobulbs together build the mass needed for flowering.

Flowering and signs to watch for. Flower spikes appear on a mature plant with firm pseudobulbs and leaves adapted to the light. A soft base or a sour substrate smell indicates excess moisture. Folded leaves may indicate irregular watering or damaged roots. Correcting the light, drainage, and ventilation produces more reliable results than forcing flowering.
