Hoya obovata is a botanical species valued for its thick, glossy, obovate to almost round leaves, often marked with subtle silver spots. Its fleshy foliage and climbing habit give it a robust appearance that is easy to showcase on a support or in a hanging pot. The silver spots are a natural splash pattern on the leaves, and their number and distribution vary between leaves and specimens.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are opposite, firm, and leathery, with rounded tips and entire margins. The dark green background may feature anything from a few spots to more visible silvery-gray markings. The plant produces vigorous vines and can anchor itself to a support with adventitious roots. In cultivation, it is sometimes colloquially called “hoya cactus” because of its thick leaves, but this comparison is not a botanical name.

Flowers and fragrance. It produces umbels of waxy, white-pinkish flowers with a deep pink to red corona toward the center. The flowers are fragrant, and the scent is easier to notice in the evening; its intensity may vary depending on the age of the flowers and the microclimate.

Botanical identity and origin. The accepted name is Hoya obovata Decne., published in 1844. It is an epiphytic species from the humid tropical biome, native to Thailand, Vietnam, Sulawesi, and Maluku. The epithet “obovata” describes the shape of the leaf, which is wider toward the tip. The plant sold under this name is the separate species.

Substrate: use an airy, well-draining mix suitable for epiphytic species. We recommend the professional substrate for Hoya and Anthurium - SG Mix.
