The Calanthe varieties suitable for growing in the garden mainly come from Japan. There are nearly 200 species, most of which appear in the Far East; you will also find different types of Calanthe in Central America, tropical Africa, and Australia. The name is a contraction of the Greek words Kalos (beautiful) and Anthos (flower).
