Introduction

Cymbidium is the orchid genus known for spectacular winter blooms, long flower spikes and long-lasting flowers — “boat,” from the Latin cymba, referring to the shape of the lip. It includes dozens of botanical species and many horticultural hybrids. These are sympodial plants, with pseudobulbs and annual growth; depending on the species, they may be epiphytic, lithophytic or terrestrial.

In cultivation, modern hybrids come from breeding programs that began in the 19th century (the first hybrid: 1889, eburneum × lowianum). The goal was to obtain large, long-lasting flowers with intense coloring. There are standard types (normal / large size) and miniature types; some lines produce pendent inflorescences (e.g. from devonianum and aloifolium).

Important regarding growing parameters: the temperatures, humidity levels and watering frequencies below are general guidelines, not absolute limits. Species, hybrids and already acclimatized plants can tolerate fairly wide variations. Adjust care according to the appearance of the leaves and pseudobulbs, growth rate, ventilation, light and the actual temperature in the growing space.

History, botany and hybridization

The genus Cymbidium comprises approximately 52 botanical species with persistent leaves, belonging to the Orchidaceae family. The plants are herbaceous perennials with sympodial growth: the pseudobulbs are enlarged stem branches connected by a pseudorhizome, which allows successive development of new growths. In nature, the species may grow on tree bark, in hollows and humus, or terrestrially. This diversity explains the differences among the hybrids available commercially.

At the beginning of the 19th century, orchid collectors brought plants from Asia to Europe. These became the basic material for hybridization. The first recorded hybrid, Cymbidium eburneum × lowianum, appeared in 1889. Later, species such as parishii, insigne, erythrostylum, hookerianum, lowianum, eburneum, traceyanum and ansoni contributed to the development of hybrids with different colors, sizes and flowering periods. For example, lowianum and hookerianum were important for green flowers, while eburneum and insigne contributed to white and pink shades.

H.G. Alexander obtained the hybrid Cymbidium Alexanderi Westonbirt (eburneolowianum × insigne), which was valuable for lines with white, pink, yellow and green flowers, blooming mainly in autumn and winter. Cymbidium Pauwelsii (insigne × lowianum) and later Cymbidium Babylon contributed to hybrids with large flowers and intense colors. In terms of size, there are standard forms, miniatures and hybrids between these two types; species such as devonianum and aloifolium contributed to pendent inflorescences.

Growth habit and types

Pseudobulbs are usually spherical or ovoid (1–15 cm), often covered at the base by leaf sheaths. The leaves vary considerably: from thin and long (up to ~150 cm) to broader and thicker in species that grow in strong light. Flower spikes emerge from the base of the pseudobulbs; a pseudobulb usually blooms only once in its lifetime — afterward, it serves as a reservoir for new growths until it is fully depleted and dries out.

Standard vs. miniature. Standard-sized varieties take up more space and require bright light and cool nights. Miniatures are easier to manage in an apartment and follow the same day/night temperature-difference principles, although they do not require as significant a day/night difference.

Temperature and flowering

The key to flowering in Cymbidium is a clear difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. As a general reference for many hybrids: days around 20–24°C (or higher) and nights of 10–14°C during spike initiation; a useful difference is often approximately 8–14°C. If the plant is kept indoors, this difference can be achieved in autumn by placing it in a very bright, unheated room or on a sheltered balcony, bringing it indoors before temperatures fall below what the hybrid can tolerate. Do not force cooling below the plant’s limits: always observe how your own plant responds. In the cold season, a very bright location at 10–18°C is excellent. Many plants can remain outdoors as long as the temperature does not fall below ~3–10°C (depending on the hybrid) and humidity remains reasonable.

Flower longevity depends on the temperature during flowering: ~10–12°C → up to ~12 weeks; ~21°C → often less than 3 weeks. The reason is physiological: lower temperatures slow the flower’s metabolism.

Light and humidity

Light. It needs abundant but filtered light (without very strong sun, which can cause leaf burn). Good light = more abundant flowering and more intense colors; insufficient light = pale or sparse flowers. Humidity: usually 40–70%. In summer, misting in the morning or afternoon can help, provided the leaves are dry by evening.

Watering and fertilizing

Watering. As a general guideline, once a week; in hot weather, sometimes every 2–3 days, depending on surface dryness and the weight of the pot. During active growth: water generously, without allowing standing water. After the new growths have matured: reduce watering, but do not leave the substrate completely dry for extended periods.

Fertilizing. During active growth: use a 30-10-10 formula at no more than 25% of the dose indicated on the label. From late August / early September until around November: switch to a formula rich in phosphorus and potassium (e.g. 6-30-30 or 10-52-10). After November: water only — late fertilizing can cause bud drop or produce deformed flowers.

Repotting and division

Substrate. For Cymbidium, we recommend Premium substrate for Cambria, Cymbidium, Oncidium, Zygopetalum and Dendrobium, a mix suited to vigorous roots and their need for aeration with moderate moisture retention. The substrate should be replaced every 2–3 years (sometimes every 4–5 years when using good coconut fiber), following an assessment. Do not use universal potting soil or heavy peat, as these can suffocate and damage the roots. Before moving the plant, hydrate it thoroughly. The best time is after flowering. When dividing, retain groups of 3–5 pseudobulbs. Use a taller, stable pot for 2–3 years of growth; place older bulbs toward the edge so that new growths emerge toward the center.

After flowering: remove the faded flowers. When only 2–3 flowers remain on the spike, it is worth cutting the spike — otherwise it unnecessarily consumes the pseudobulbs’ reserves and weakens development for the following season.

Why it does not bloom

  • Nights that are too warm in autumn: for many hybrids, aim for nights of approximately 10–14°C and warmer days, without falling below the plant’s tolerance
  • Insufficient light throughout the growing season
  • Late-season fertilizing with high nitrogen / foliar fertilizing applied to buds in winter
  • The plant was divided too aggressively (too few bulbs per division = insufficient resources)
  • Extreme water stress (lack of water) or roots in degraded, rotting substrate

Common mistakes

  • Growing the plant beside a radiator in winter, with nighttime temperatures above 20°C, and expecting flower spikes
  • Reducing light excessively, treating Cymbidium like a Phalaenopsis kept in shade
  • Watering daily/frequently in a pot without drainage and without checking the substrate = a plant with low viability
  • Leaving faded spikes and flowers on the plant until they rot in the substrate

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep Cymbidium on an open balcony or terrace?
Yes, from spring through autumn, in filtered light, protected from midday sun and frost. The natural outdoor day/night temperature difference is a major advantage for flowering.

Is it serious if the leaves turn yellow after flowering?
Aging foliage that deteriorates is normal. Mass yellowing combined with soft pseudobulbs means you should check the watering and roots.
