Sansevieria 'Silver Crown' is an ornamental cultivar valued for its compact, almost sculptural habit and its narrow, rigid leaves arranged radially like a crown. The coloration is predominantly silvery green to very light green, crossed by darker green markings that give it its characteristic metallic appearance. The cultivar is also marketed under the modern botanical name Dracaena 'Silver Crown', with Sansevieria being the traditional horticultural name.

The leaves grow obliquely or almost vertically from the center of the plant, while their narrow, slightly channelled shape creates a compact silhouette, different from classic sansevierias with broad, flat leaves. As the plant matures, it may produce new rosettes through rhizomes, gradually forming a fuller clump.

🌿 Botanical characteristics

  • Commercial name: Sansevieria 'Silver Crown'

  • Modern botanical name: Dracaena 'Silver Crown'

  • Family: Asparagaceae

  • Plant type: perennial succulent, grown for its decorative foliage

  • Compact habit, with radially arranged leaves

  • Narrow, rigid and pointed leaves

  • Silvery green to very light green coloration

  • Darker green transverse markings

  • Produces new growth through rhizomes over time

  • Flowering is rare when grown indoors.

☀️ Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers bright, indirect light, but Sansevieria tolerates a wide range of conditions, from bright light to partial shade. Sufficient light helps maintain a compact habit.

  • Substrate: very well-drained and airy. Compact, water-retentive substrate should be avoided.

  • Watering: sparingly; allow the substrate to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Sansevierias are drought-tolerant and much more sensitive to excess water than to short periods of dryness.

  • Humidity: adapts very well to typical household humidity.

  • Temperature: prefers moderate to warm temperatures; the RHS indicates that Sansevieria grows well at around 15-24°C, while also tolerating higher temperatures.

  • Fertilization: moderate during the active growing period.

  • Cold tolerance: does not tolerate frost and is grown in Romania as an indoor plant.

📌 Note

The shape, length, position and intensity of the silvery coloration may naturally vary from one specimen to another and between the leaves of the same plant. New leaves may initially have a different shade from mature leaves.

Following handling, transport or acclimatization to new environmental conditions, rigid leaves may show minor scratches, bends, dry tips, scars or other cosmetic imperfections. These aspects do not normally affect the plant's health, viability or development.
