Hoya vitellinoides

Hoya vitellinoides is a prized collector’s species, valued for its large, firm leaves marked by a spectacular network of dark veins. As the plant matures, the foliage develops an architectural, almost prehistoric appearance, while the long vines form a climbing habit. This is a Hoya with highly decorative leaves, sought after especially for its prominent venation and the contrast between the green leaf blade and the veins.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are broad and elongated, with a thick texture and very visible reticulate venation. Leaf size and appearance vary depending on the plant’s maturity, light, and growing conditions; the product’s commercial name does not guarantee a fixed size for every specimen.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers appear in rounded umbels and range in color from pale yellow to creamy white. The fragrance is described as citrus-like, but its intensity may vary depending on the clone, flower maturity, and microclimate.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya vitellinoides Bakh.f. is an accepted botanical name, published in 1950. The species is native to Sumatra and Java, where it grows as an epiphytic or lithophytic vine in the humid tropical biome. It should not be confused with Hoya meredithii, a distinct species native to Borneo, even though the two names are sometimes informally treated as equivalents in horticulture.
