Hoya mirabilis

Hoya mirabilis Kidyoo is an accepted epiphytic species native to Thailand, published in 2012. It is related to Hoya lacunosa, but has larger, cream-green, pubescent flowers with a yellow-green corona. The foliage is narrow, elliptic or lanceolate, dark green, sometimes with subtle silvery spots. In bright light, the margins may develop a reddish tint; this is not variegation. It has a small, trailing or climbing vine-like habit. The flowers are fragrant, with a scent of freshly cut grass. The height, including the pot, is approximately 10–15 cm.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are leathery, ovate, elliptic or lanceolate, small, with pointed tips. The upper surface is dark green; the underside is paler. Occasional silvery spots may appear; this is not variegation. In intense light, the margins may turn reddish. It has a slender vine-like habit and is also suitable as a hanging plant. The decorative pot is not included in the price. The height, including the pot, remains approximately 10–15 cm.

Flowers and fragrance. The umbels are pendulous, with 5–16 flowers in the original description and often 10–20 in cultivation. The corolla is pubescent, cream-green when opening and then becoming more yellow, with reflexed lobes; the corona is yellow-green, with a lighter center. The flowers are larger than those of many forms of H. lacunosa. The freshly cut grass fragrance has been confirmed in cultivation; its intensity varies. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted name is Hoya mirabilis Kidyoo, Trop. Nat. Hist. 12(1): 21 (2012). The type originates from Ratchaburi, Khao Leam, Thailand. The species has also circulated as Hoya sp. Khao Laem. It is a distinct species, not a variety of Hoya lacunosa Blume. Clones with narrower or broader leaves also exist.
