Hoya archboldiana - XL fragrant flowers

Hoya archboldiana is an epiphytic vine native to New Guinea, described in 1937 by C. Norman and named after explorer Richard Archbold. The foliage is large, glossy, and oblong. Young leaves may be reddish before turning dark green. In good light, the foliage may develop additional coloration. The flowers are large and cup-shaped, among the largest in the genus, and are fragrant. Its large flowers are truly memorable.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are thick, glossy, oblong-lanceolate, with a pointed tip and a slightly cordate base. Under good growing conditions, they can reach approximately 16–18 cm in length and 5–7 cm in width. New leaves may emerge reddish-brown before deepening to green. In bright, filtered light, the foliage may develop additional shades. The plant has a vining habit: the shoots may climb or trail. Shoot length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are cup-shaped, with reflexed lobes, measuring approximately 4–5 cm in diameter. The color ranges from whitish pink to deep pink, with a dark red corona. The shade may vary depending on temperature and light. The flowers are fragrant, especially in the evening. They last for several days. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya archboldiana C.Norman, published in 1937. The species is native to New Guinea, including the Aru Islands. It is not a variegated form.
