Vaccinium corymbosum 'Bluecrop', also known as "Highbush Bluecrop" (Highbush Blueberry), is a blueberry cultivar from the Ericaceae family, considered one of the most popular and reliable varieties due to its consistent productivity, tasty fruits, and excellent resistance. Native to North America, this deciduous shrub is ideal for gardens, commercial crops, or containers, offering both culinary and ornamental value.

Appearance of leaves, flowers, and fruits

  • Leaves: The leaves are oval, dark green, glossy, measuring 4-5 cm in length. In autumn, they turn vibrant shades of bright red and orange, adding a spectacular decorative effect.
  • Flowers: In late spring (May-June), bell-shaped flowers appear, cream-white with a pale pink tint, grouped in clusters. The flowers attract pollinators, especially bees and butterflies.
  • Fruits: The fruits are medium to large blueberries, light blue in color, with a firm texture and a sweet-tart taste, perfect for fresh consumption, desserts, jams, or freezing. They ripen in mid-summer (July), forming abundant clusters.

Growth characteristics

  • Height and width: Grows as an upright, vigorous shrub, reaching 1.5-2 meters in height and 1.2-1.8 meters in width, suitable for medium gardens or group plantings.
  • Vigor: Has moderate growth, with robust branches, forming a dense, well-structured bush.
  • Type: It is a deciduous shrub with multiple stems, producing few suckers from the roots, maintaining an orderly shape.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure: Prefers full sun for optimal fruiting but also tolerates partial shade, with slightly reduced production. A location sheltered from strong winds protects flowers and fruits.
  • Soil: Requires acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5), rich in humus, well-drained but moisture-retentive. Adding peat, pine needles, or acidic compost is essential to adjust soil pH.
  • Watering: Needs regular watering, especially during flowering and fruiting, to prevent soil drying. A layer of organic mulch (e.g., bark or pine needles) helps maintain moisture and protect roots.
  • Pollination: It is self-fertile, but cross-pollination with other blueberry varieties with similar flowering periods (e.g., 'Darrow' or 'Toro') increases fruit production and quality.

Care and resistance

  • Resistance: Extremely hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -25°C to -30°C (zones 4-8), ideal for temperate climates, including Romania. It tolerates winters well, but mulch is recommended to protect roots in very cold areas.
  • Fertilization: Apply fertilizer for acid-loving plants (e.g., rhododendrons) in early spring, avoiding excess nitrogen which favors leaves over fruits.
  • Pruning: In the first two years, remove flowers to stimulate root and branch development. From the third year, prune in February-March dead, weak, or branches older than 5-6 years to encourage fruiting and maintain shrub shape.
  • Pests and diseases: Resistant to most diseases but can be affected by gray mold or insects like aphids. Good ventilation and proper drainage prevent problems. Fruits attract birds, so protective nets may be necessary.
  • Fauna: Flowers support pollinators such as bees, and fruits are consumed by birds (e.g., thrushes, starlings) and small mammals.
