What Is Keiki Paste?
Keiki Paste is a horticultural preparation for local application, used by plant enthusiasts as part of vegetative propagation techniques. It was initially used mainly for Phalaenopsis orchids, but in practice it is also used on other orchids and ornamental plants that have suitable buds or nodes for this type of application.
The result of such an intervention is not identical from one plant to another. The response depends on the species, the type and position of the bud, the timing of application, the plant’s overall condition, and the growing conditions. Adequate light, healthy roots, balanced nutrition, and an active growth period remain essential.
Before Application
Use the product only on healthy, well-hydrated plants with functional roots that are in a favorable period of growth. After application, maintain stable growing conditions and moderate fertilization. Avoid using it on plants affected by rot, pests, severe dehydration, or other major cultivation problems.
Wear gloves, avoid contact with the eyes and skin, and keep the product away from children and animals. Apply only a very small amount locally, using the tip of a toothpick or a similar tool. A very thin layer is sufficient. Applying an excessive amount does not improve the result and may damage the bud’s delicate tissues.
Application on Phalaenopsis
Choose a healthy node on a green flower spike, preferably after flowering has ended. Carefully remove the protective scale covering the bud without injuring the spike, then apply a very thin film of paste directly to the exposed area using the tip of a toothpick.
Bud behavior can vary depending, among other things, on its position on the spike and the plant’s condition. In some cases, vegetative growth may appear, while in others the spike may continue branching or develop differently. There is no absolute rule, and the result cannot be guaranteed. The first visible changes may take time; if the area shows no changes, avoid excessive repeated application and first check the general growing conditions.
Application on Other Orchids
Monopodial orchids. On Vanda, Aerides, Rhynchostylis, Angraecum, and related hybrids, basal nodes protected by old, completely dry sheaths may be considered. Remove only sheaths that come away easily and work precisely without injuring the plant’s tissues.
Orchids with creeping rhizomes. On Cattleya, Oncidium, Cambria, Zygopetalum, Encyclia, Coelogyne, and Maxillaria, repotting may be a suitable time to inspect the rhizome and identify growth eyes. First read the repotting guide.
Orchids with pseudobulbs. On Catasetum, Cycnoches, Mormodes, Dendrobium, and Epidendrum, remove only completely dry sheaths and work exclusively on healthy, well-formed areas. For small or poorly developed plants, it is recommended that you avoid treating several buds simultaneously.
Hoya and Araceae
On Hoya, the product may be applied precisely to a healthy node as part of plant propagation or growth-management techniques. In our cultivation experiments, we observed different responses between specimens, including the development of new growth or the reactivation of previously inactive areas. These observations do not represent guaranteed results for all species or specimens.
On Philodendron, Monstera, and Syngonium, apply only to healthy, well-developed nodes. Avoid plants that have been recently transplanted, recently moved, or are still acclimating, and do not use the product on damaged stems.
Results and Common Mistakes
No visible response. Not every bud or node responds in the same way. The viability of the selected area, season, light, temperature, nutrition, and condition of the root system can all influence the result.
Applying too much. A thick layer does not mean a faster or better result. Use a minimal amount and avoid frequent reapplications.
Applying to a weakened plant. The product does not replace proper growing conditions and does not solve problems such as damaged roots, dehydration, insufficient light, or pest infestations. Correct the underlying cause first and use the product only on plants that are in good condition.
