Senecio Herreianus (Pianta pisello, Collana di perline)

Senecio herreianus, also known by the common names „String of Watermelons” or „String of Beads”, is a hanging succulent plant from the Asteraceae family, related to Senecio rowleyanus but with slightly different leaves. It is an excellent choice for hanging pots, succulent arrangements, or modern decorations due to its unique leaves and graphic appearance.

🔹 Botanical features:

• Form: Creeping or hanging plant, with thin, long, and flexible stems that can reach over 1 meter in length. Ideal for growing in hanging pots or on high shelves.

• Leaves: Fleshy, oval-elongated, with a slightly pointed tip, in light green to deep green color, marked with fine translucent stripes, similar to those of a watermelon – hence the name “String of Watermelons.” The leaves are arranged alternately along the stem.

• Flowers: Small, white-lilac or cream, tubular in shape with a sweet scent, appearing in the warm season but more rarely indoors.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Prefers strong indirect light. Without enough light, the plant becomes elongated, and the leaves lose their color intensity and compact shape.

• Watering: Low. Water only when the soil is completely dry, as with all succulents. Excess water leads to root and stem rot.

• Soil: Very well drained – cactus and succulent soil mix, with added perlite, sand, or fine gravel.

• Temperature: Tolerates heat well but must be protected from cold and frost. In the cold season, keep indoors in a bright and thermally stable place.

• Humidity: Does not require high humidity. Prefers dry and well-ventilated air.

• Fertilizing: Can be fertilized once a month during the growing period (spring–summer) with a weak fertilizer for succulents.
