Cattleya luteola (Quintal × Peruflora) is a selected cultivar of the species Cattleya luteola, a miniature epiphytic orchid from the genus Cattleya, native to the lowland tropical forests of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia (100-2000 m altitude). This specific hybrid, derived from the selection of the parents “Quintal” and “Peruflora,” is valued for its vibrant flowers and compact size.

Botanical description:

  • Plant: Features slender pseudobulbs, 2-5 cm tall, single-leafed, with an almost creeping growth. The leaf is lance-shaped, 5-10 cm long, stiff. The plant remains compact, ideal for small spaces.
  • Flowers: The inflorescence produces 2-10 flowers, 3-5 cm in diameter, of an intense yellow, sometimes lemon or chartreuse, with a contrasting lip, white with magenta or reddish accents. The flowers are fragrant, with a sweet, fruity scent. Blooming occurs in summer-autumn.
  • Specific characteristics: This cultivar has larger and rounder flowers than the species average, due to the selection of tetraploid (4N) parents, which gives the petals a sturdier substance and a fuller appearance.
  • Cultivation: Prefers moderate to strong indirect light, high humidity, and temperatures of 18-29°C at night, 24-32°C during the day. Grown in pine bark or sphagnum moss, with excellent drainage, or mounted on cork/driftwood (if humidity is suitable). Watering can be done weekly, reduced in winter, ensuring the substrate dries between waterings.
