Skimmia japonica 'Finchy' is a premium ornamental shrub, highly appreciated for its unchanged appearance throughout the year and the elegance of its buds. Unlike other varieties with red buds, 'Finchy' stands out through dense clusters of buds that are white-green to cream, which remain on the plant all winter, creating a beautiful contrast with the dark green foliage. In spring, these buds open into fragrant flowers, offering a two-act spectacle.

🌿 Botanical characteristics:

  • Genus: Skimmia

  • Family: Rutaceae (distantly related to citrus)

  • Origin: Japan, China

  • Foliage: evergreen (green all year), leathery, glossy leaves of intense dark green

  • Flowers: in winter it shows decorative white-green buds; in spring (April-May) these open into small white flowers with a sweet, very pleasant fragrance

  • Size: compact growth, in the form of a rounded bush; remains small in a pot, in the garden it can reach 80-100 cm over time

☀️ Growing conditions:

  • Light: prefers partial shade or shade; avoid direct sun, especially at noon, as it can discolor the leaves (turning them yellow)

  • Soil: loves acidic soil (substrate for Rhododendron/Azalea or mix with acidic peat is recommended); soil must be well-drained

  • Watering: moderate; keep the soil slightly moist but without waterlogging the roots

  • Temperature: it is a cold-resistant plant (outdoor), ideal for gardens or uncovered terraces; withstands the frost in Romania well if planted in the garden

💚 Advantages and uses:

  • Winter decoration: it is one of the few plants that looks spectacular in the cold season due to its buds

  • Versatile: ideal for pots on balconies/terraces during winter or planted in the shade of trees in the garden

  • Fragrance: spring flowers attract bees and perfume the garden or balcony

  • Structure: its compact shape and evergreen foliage provide garden structure in any season

Note: Height and density may vary slightly from one specimen to another.

Height including pot: approx. 20-30 cm
