Salvia officinalis ‘Icterina’ is a variety of common sage (garden sage), but with spectacular foliage, mottled in shades of green and golden yellow. It is both a remarkable ornamental plant and an aromatic and medicinal herb, highly valued in cooking and herbal medicine. It can be successfully grown in the garden, in pots or window boxes, where it adds a lively splash of color.

  • Common names: Golden sage, mottled sage

  • Family: Lamiaceae

  • Growth type: Aromatic perennial plant, with a bushy, compact habit

  • Leaves: Oval, slightly velvety, mottled in green and golden yellow, very decorative and fragrant

🌞 Growing conditions:

  • Light: Prefers full sun, which enhances the leaf coloring

  • Soil: Well-drained, sandy or stony, even poor soil

  • Watering: Moderate; tolerates drought once well established

  • Minimum temperature tolerance: down to –20°C, very well adapted to the climate of Romania

Uses:

  • Aromatic plant in the kitchen – leaves have an intense aroma, used fresh or dried for roasts, sauces, soups, and marinades

  • Medicinal plant – traditionally used for teas with tonic, anti-inflammatory, and digestive effects
