Monstera lechleriana 'Variegata' - exemplare XL
Monstera lechleriana 'Variegata', also known as the variegated "Swiss Cheese Plant," is a rare and spectacular variety of the species Monstera lechleriana, from the Araceae family. Native to the tropical forests of Central America, from Panama to Peru, this epiphytic plant is highly valued by collectors due to its large, perforated leaves and unique variegation, which combines dark green with white or cream spots. It is an ideal indoor plant, with an exotic appearance and moderate care requirements.
Leaf and Flower Appearance
- Leaves: The leaves are long, elliptical, with a glossy texture and striking variegation, consisting of spots, speckles, or stripes of white, cream, or pale yellow on a dark green background. Juvenile leaves are smaller, 5-10 cm, and lack perforations (fenestrations). At maturity, leaves can reach 25-50 cm in length (sometimes over 90 cm in optimal conditions) and develop oval fenestrations, especially near the central vein, giving them the typical "monstrous" look of the genus. Unlike Monstera adansonii, the fenestrations are fewer and closer to the main vein.
- Flowers: Under indoor conditions, Monstera lechleriana 'Variegata' rarely blooms. When it does, it produces a white spadix surrounded by a cream spathe, typical of aroids, but the flowers are not the main attraction of the plant.
Growth Characteristics
- Height: As a climbing plant, it can grow up to 2-2.5 meters indoors if given support, such as a moss pole or trellis. In its natural environment, it can reach 3-10 meters, climbing trees with the help of aerial roots.
- Vigor: It has moderate to fast growth, depending on light and humidity conditions. Variegation may slow growth compared to the green form, as the white areas contain less chlorophyll.
- Type: It is an epiphytic/semi-epiphytic plant, with aerial roots that help it climb or anchor in the soil. It requires support to reach its full potential.
Growing Conditions
- Exposure: Prefers bright indirect light, ideally near an east- or west-facing window, less than 1 meter from the window. Low light leads to slow growth and loss of variegation, while direct sunlight can burn the leaves, especially the white areas.
- Soil: Needs an aerated, well-drained substrate rich in organic matter. A mix of potting soil, orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coconut coir is ideal.
- Watering: Water when the top 5-7 cm of soil are dry, usually once a week during the growing season (spring-summer) and less often in winter (every 1-2 weeks). It is sensitive to overwatering, which can cause root rot.
- Temperature: Grows well at 18-27°C, ideal for home conditions. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and cold drafts.
-
Humidity: Prefers high humidity (above 45%, ideally 60%+). A humidifier, a tray with pebbles and water, or grouping with other plants helps maintain humidity. Frequent misting is not necessary, as excess water on leaves can promote fungal diseases.
Care and Resistance
- Fertilization: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) once a month in spring and summer, diluted to half strength. Do not fertilize in winter.
- Pests: Can be affected by spider mites, scale insects, or aphids. Regularly inspect leaves and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Good ventilation prevents fungal diseases such as leaf spots.
- Propagation: Easily propagated by stem cuttings, cut with 2-4 nodes and at least one leaf. Cuttings root in water or moist substrate in 3-6 weeks, with spring or summer being the ideal seasons.
Monstera lechleriana 'Variegata' is a collector's plant, perfect for decorating interiors due to its dramatic leaves and unique variegation. It is ideal in pots with support (moss pole or trellis), on shelves, or in bright corners. It can be grown in hanging baskets, but fenestrations and large leaves develop better if the plant is allowed to climb. Adds a tropical atmosphere to living rooms, offices, or apartment greenhouses.
Origin
Monstera lechleriana is native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, growing as an epiphyte on tree trunks in humid and shaded conditions. The 'Variegata' variety is a recently introduced horticultural selection, becoming highly sought after due to its rarity and aesthetics.
Note: Photos are for informational purposes and the level of variegation varies from plant to plant, but all specimens show the specific variegation.
Due to the very sensitive foliage, the specimen you receive may have some defects.
Plants will be chosen randomly - the "plant in the photo" is not sold and a specific specimen cannot be selected.
