Hoya linearis (Taiwan)

Hoya linearis is an epiphytic species with a trailing habit, native to an area extending from Nepal to southwestern China and Indochina. Its foliage is narrow, soft, and finely hairy, growing on slender, hanging stems. Under good growing conditions, it produces fragrant, star-shaped white umbels. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions. The fine veins create a distinctive pattern.

Foliage and growth. The stems are thin, flexible, and hairy, with a naturally cascading habit. The leaves appear in opposite pairs; they are linear, fleshy, finely hairy, and usually reach approximately 5 cm in length. Their light green color and soft texture create a delicate curtain of foliage, unlike Hoyas with broad, waxy leaves. In its natural habitat, the species grows in evergreen mountain forests, not in the lowland forests from which Thailand, Malaysia, or Indonesia were incorrectly attributed as its native range.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are white and star-shaped, grouped in umbels. The corona may have yellowish tones and a slight pink tint in the center. They are fragrant; growers sometimes describe a lemon note, but the perception and intensity vary. We do not assign a single fragrance profile. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted name is Hoya linearis Wall. ex D.Don, published in 1825. It is an epiphytic subshrub of the subtropical biome.
