Hoya ilagiorum

Hoya ilagiorum is an epiphytic species from the Philippines, sought both for its long, waxy foliage with prominent veins and for its umbels of waxy flowers, which can range from pink and orange to red. The accepted botanical name is Hoya ilagiorum Kloppenb., Siar & Cajano, published in 2011. The type was collected in Luzon, Laguna Province. The plant has a vining habit and flowers relatively easily in cultivation, including on still-small specimens, when light levels are good. In the Secret Garden greenhouse, it has flowered repeatedly since February 2021.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are long, thick and waxy, with pointed tips and prominent venation. Horticultural sources indicate dimensions of up to approximately 20 cm in length and 7.5 cm in width on mature plants; measurements vary according to age and growing conditions. The stems are thin and branched, making them suitable for training on a support. Some leaves may display natural colouration or growth defects, without this changing the species’ identity.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and glossy, with a frequently reflexed corolla, in shades of pink-orange, bronze-red or red. The colour may change during flowering and can be influenced by light and season; during the cold period, the shades observed in cultivation are often lighter. The flowers are fragrant, with medium intensity according to greenhouse observations, but the exact fragrance profile has not been established. An umbel lasts for several days, usually around 5–7. Persistent peduncles may flower again.

Botanical identity and origin. The accepted name is Hoya ilagiorum Kloppenb., Siar & Cajano. The type originates from Mount Mabilog, Nagcarlan, Laguna, at approximately 300 m. The epithet honours the Ilag family. Horticultural selections subsequently registered in the Philippines do not apply to this product: this is the species, not a named cultivar.
