Hoya griffithii

Hoya griffithii is an epiphytic species with elongated foliage, native to the region extending from Assam to southern China, Hainan, and Indochina. The leaves are narrow, glossy, and dark green, sometimes with a subtle silver splash, and may develop reddish tones in brighter light. Under good growing conditions, the plant produces umbels with large, almost flat flowers that are white or pale pink, with a darker central area. The flowers are fragrant, and the vines can be trained onto a support.

Foliage and growth. This species has an epiphytic vining habit and produces narrow, glossy, dark green leaves. The foliage may have subtle silver markings, varying from one leaf to another, and may turn reddish when exposed to more intense light. The plant is better suited to being trained onto a support than left to twine around nearby plants on its own.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are large and almost flat, usually white or pale pink, with a darker central area. They appear in umbels. The flowers are fragrant; the intensity and perception of the fragrance may vary throughout the flowering period and between specimens.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya griffithii Hook.f. is an accepted botanical name, published in 1883. The species was named after William Griffith, a British physician and botanist who worked in British India. Its native range extends from Assam to southern China, Hainan, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam, in a subtropical biome.
